Film Scanners

Not willing to buy a digital camera just yet? You can still have digital photos as you can buy a film scanner and scan your films directly to your computer. Film scanners are very affordable and it's very easy to make them work.

Scanning film is better than scanning prints, because when scanning the film you're using the original image, but when scanning the print you get a second generation copy. Film has greatly more detail and contrast available than when you scan a paper photo. Film is capable of over 3000 dpi, compared to only about 300 dpi for color photo print paper.

Here are some film scanners I like:

Nikon Coolscan IV ED Film Scanner

With instant installation via a USB connection, the Nikon Coolscan IV ED is just moments away from processing your film at an impressive rate of 42 seconds per image. With a dynamic range of 3.6 and 42-bit images, the scanner guarantees clean images and vivid detail. It's compatible with Macintosh and PC.

Canon FS4000US Film Scanner

Canon FS4000US film scanner provides an impressive 4,000 dpi optical resolution. Including both SCSI-2 and USB interfaces, 14-bit A/D conversion, and autofocus, this film scanner offers an excellent mix of professional functions. Canon's FARE technology automatically detects and corrects flaws on the film, while the automatic film type detection easily distinguishes between slides, 35mm, and APS. It is compatible with both Macintosh and PC systems.
