Image Manipulation
A big advantage with digital cameras is that you can fix photos that you've taken later on when you've transferred them to your computer. All sort of irritating problems can happen and while with printed photos you couldn't do anything to fix them you can now. Irritating problems, like red eye or that your picture is to dark/light are easily corrected.
To fix the problems above you need a image manipulation program.
Adobe Photoshop is probably the best image manipulation program available on the market today and is used extensively by professional photographers and graphic artists. Unfortunately it isn't the easiest program to learn for a beginner, not to mention its high price tag and that's why I think you should not start with Photoshop.
You should start with Paint Shop Pro, a great shareware program with almost all the features you need for image manipulation, it's also easier to learn and a lot cheaper. When you've mastered Paint Shop you can always if needed buy Photoshop later on.
